Question about XJ650 final gear drive and wheel gear lubrication

    Hi. Does anybody know if you are supposed to have grease lubrication on the rear wheel shaft drive gear (as pictured below) or if this area will be lubricated by the final gear drive oil?

    Welcome to the forum. It should be greased. The final drive oil is contained in the hub.

    As @Franz said, it should be greased, with heavy bearing grease. The theory is that the grease helps cushion the splines and helps keep them from binding together with the forward and back shocks of drive and coast. Gear oil in the final drive should be contained in the final drive and not out where the splines are.

    This was the magic grease from my shaft drive Honda days. Hondas are fussy there.
