Hi all! I am new to the forms and just bought a 1981 xj550 maxim.
I started working on it and I bought it knowing that the gas tank is rusted and has holes in it thinking I could just get a replacement without much issue.
turns out they seem hard to find.
ebay has produced a bunch of chines tanks that I don't know will work and one nos tank for a grand.
has anyone tried any of these chinese tanks? or know where someone can get a gas tank for them?
does not have to be an oem tank. my plans are turning it into a scrambler bike / dirt track style bike. or know of any decent fitting aftermarket tanks.
    Thanks!

I have a tank for an 82 XJ650. Maybe you could modify it to fit your 550.

Try that link... I think 550 and 650 swap, but you'll have to read that link.

I've heard good and bad about the China tanks (the around 100 dollar ones?) I think the petcocks are only on or off, no reserve... So I would probably swap that. The only bad thing I've heard is they come a bit surface rusty sometimes?
    I think they're only 2ish gallon s as well.

The tank has some light interior rust. Exterior is in good shape. No dents or rust. Comes with locking cap and functioning petcock.

650 Maxim tank is NOT a bolt-on and go tank. They do look almost the same, but the cups that hold the tank onto the rubbers and not at the same locations. The 650 cups need to be removed and reattached. Better bet is to get the correct tank.

Have you thought about re-lining the current tank? Might be cheaper...

Thanks for the help guys! I ended up using the vinegar method and it got the tank way more clean than i thought it would have. 1 more vinegar soak than i am going to line the tank.
