Bikes you have owned

Hopefully, I can tempt many members to share their lists!

1974 Suzuki A100 - bought in the end of 1979, fixed over winter to be ready when I go my license in May, 1980. Rode it for less than 4 months before replacing it with the:
1980 Honda CB100 - bought brand new at the early fall of 1980. Kept it for 18 months and rode it 10,000 miles. Or 16,000 km, actually.
1976 Tempo Panter 50 - owned it for 2-3 terrible months, between the CB100 and the:
1978 Honda CX500 - ill-handling and with a torturous saddle, I totaled it completely after just 3 months of ownership. Took nearly a year to first heal, then get finance for a:
1983 Yamaha XJ750 Seca - bought brand new during summer 1983, sold less than a year later with 1200 miles and two crashes on its resume. Took almost a year to walk properly again after serious injury.
1976 Honda CB350F - a neglected bike I bought in 1984 and sold in 1986. Took me through Europe and I think I ride it about 10,000 miles. It did have charm. And a smooth running engine.
1978 Suzuki GS550E - bought in the spring of 1988, after being bikeless for nearly two years. Only rode once in 1987, on my brother's RG250T. I liked many things about the GS550E, but not anything about the engine. Sold in 1990 after I bought the:
1985 Honda CB1100F - the most trustworthy bike I have ridden. Like I stole it. Never took it on a ride without going 125 mph or faster. Sold within 3 months before I killed myself.
1981 Suzuki GSX400F - bought in 1990, fixed a ton of niggling faults, crashed it - and myself - into bits, including bending the frame, rebuilt it and sold it in 1992. The workmate that bought it still owns it!
1980 Honda CB250N - bought it in 1992 and sold it in the fall of 1983 or spring of 84, cannot remember. I learned a lot about fixing stuff on this, first in typical bodge fashion, then starting a new trend of doing things more properly.
1976 Yamaha XS500 - replaced the CB250N in 1994, after a complete rebuild/restoration. It had sat outside for 6 years and looked like it. Plenty of troubles, but still have fond memories, despite a crash that saw me break more bones. Sold in the Spring of 1997 after buying the:
1982 Suzuki GS650L - a bike with naff handling and comfort, but good looks and excellent shaft drive. Sold fall of 1998, when I bought the:
1983 Honda VT500FT - from a dealer. It was nothing like they had said over the phone. Sold it in 2000, bought it back a few years later, resold it, bought it again, and sold it for the last(?) time in 2013. Clearly the bike I have owned for the most years, but not the most ridden.
1984 Kawasaki Z1300DFI - bought in the fall of 2000, or spring of 2001, I forget. Terrible handler with fuel injection issues. Ridden 300 miles and then replaced it with:
1981 Honda XL500S - in 2001, a bike I tried to make into a cafe racer. Failed miserably. Sold early 2002, when I bought the brand new:
2002 Kawasaki VN800A - the bike that opened my eyes to taking in the scenery and enjoy also the straight bits binding the winding sections together. A revelation. Rode it 14,500 km, or 9k miles before exchanging it for a in the spring of 2004 to get something that could keep up with the Daytona 900 of my brother, namely the:
1996 Suzuki GSX600F Katana - a bike that ran very well for its size, handled fine, and soon made me realize I was taking much too much risk, so it got sold in the spring of 2005.
1987 Suzuki RG250 - bought and sold in 2005, without ever being ridden.
1979 Kawasaki Z400G - bought in 2005 as a fixer-upper, first ridden in August that year. What a fun bike! Kept until 2007, even got ridden through a full winter
1979 Kawasaki Z400G - bought for spares in 2006
1979 Kawasaki Z400G - see above, later in 2006. Kept the frame until 2018, planning to build a StreeTracker
1996 Triumph Sprint 900 - bought in 2006, rode it way too fast way too often, after several close calls ended up totalling it and beating myself up. Again.
1987 Suzuki VS1400 - bought in the spring of 2007 and sold late summer of 2009. Loved the engine, tried to make the rest work for me. Did not succeed.
1995 Triumph Thunderbird 900 - bought in 2009 and, together with the bike below made my Daybird.
1993 Triumph Daytona 900 - took lots of effort to mix and match with the Tbird into the mentioned Daybird, sold it in 2011 to my brother, who still has it.
1973 Yamaha RD350 - bought and sold in 2010, a project never finished
1987 Yamaha XT600Z - bought in the fall of 2010, sold early winter of 2011. A really pleasant bike, but too worn out to be worth putting money into.
1972 Mot Guzzi 850GT - bought in 2011, bike in desperate need of restoration, could not be arsed so sold it the same year.
1993 Honda CB400SF - bought in the late fall of 2011, primarily for our youngest son to practice on. Very pretty bike, but on that insisted on being crashed over and over until I did it properly in 2017. Rebuilt it as a cafe racer and exchanged it for the XVS650 in the early fall of 2019. By then, the little Honda had covered well over 40,000 km / 25k mil.
1977 Kawasaki Z650B1 - bough a pair of them in the early winter of 2011, restored, upgraded, then handed down to my oldest son in the summer of 2016. Did 32,000 km / 20k mi. on it. The bike I personally have ridden the most miles on.
1953 Royal Enfield Meteor 700 - got it in 2014, sold it untouched and unused in 2019.
1982 Yamaha XV750SE Virago - bought in 2015 with the idea of building a standard style machine, but it ended up as a scrambler, using the engine of the:
1990 Yamaha XV1100 Virago - bought in the fall of 2016, stripped and transferred bits to the XV750 to make the scrambler, a bike that was handed to my oldest son in the fall of 2018
2015 Yamaha MT-07 (FZ in America) - bought in the spring of 2017, upgraded the suspension and other stuff, began riding too fast again and my youngest son took it over early in 2018.
1999 Honda NT650V Deauville - bought early fall 2018, a really lovely bike once sorted, pity about the finger-numbing vibration that forced a sale at the end of 2020
2001 Honda NT650V Deauville - bought spring of 2019 with the plan of making it into a scrambler, but it was too complex, so it went into the role as a parts bike. Still have it, in bits - need to list it to free up space.
1990 Suzuki DR650RS - bought fall of 2019, plan was to keep it at work the main office at the other side of the country, but the garage was made into a gym and the bike was sold unused in 2020.
2001 Yamaha XVS650 Drag Star Classic - got it in exchange for the CB400SF in the fall of 2019, and went through a restoration as well as substantial suspension upgrades, which made it into a great handler (for a cruiser).
2007 Honda CBF1000A - bought at the end of 2020 as a sensible, comfortable sports tourer. Which is was. Somewhat. But speed demon had not gone away, so it was sold late spring 2021, after just 1500 km / 1000 mi, before I hurt myself again. Expected to miss it, but didn't.
2008 BMW F800ST - bought early 2022 to replace the CBF. Superb suspension, upgraded from stock. Very comfy and practical bike with excellent handling, plus a very relaxed sounding twin - just the way I like it.
1982 Yamaha XV750/1100 - bought it back from my son late spring of 2022, will receive a frame-up restomod over winter. A great machine with a very strong engine, now I will also sort the handling

 

Great list faffi , you are a bike nut for life.
That 1985 CB1100F would be the most collectible now. We didn’t even see that one in NA, although we did get an 83 without fairing same bike otherwise I think . The 87 RG250 is another keeper.
I counted all my bikes I’ve had I think I’m at around 30, not counting parts bikes, just riders. Might be an easier task to list worst bikes and favourites.

 

My guess is the CB1100F was made in 83, then tarted up with the fairing off the CBX550F2 and a bellypan fairing, and sold as an 85 model.

I’ve owned more bikes than pairs of underwear and that’s no joke!
Being in the industry for so many years I was buying and selling on the side to support my family and habit. Some bikes I had for as little as an hour just long enough to ride and polish before being sold. One new Xj750rh I owned for 3 days and 150 kilometres before it was gone to new owner and then next week I had my new xj650R
If I had a big farm like @hogfiddles does I would still have a couple of hundred bikes today BUT I would have no wife or children

 

this is my complete riding history.
1973 Kawasaki KE250 this was not mine, I was 13 but my next older brother and 3 of his friends, all 17 bought 4 brand new. This was the 1st real bike I learned to ride.
1973 Honda CR250 Elsinore - the 1st serious moto-X from Japan, very collectible today, there is a Honda promo video of Steve McQueen ripping on one on YouTube.
took a hiatus for 5 years, masochistic period with Triumph sports cars, we're all young and stupid at one time.
1982 Yamaha XJ650LJ Turbo - my 1st street bike, good learner right. ridin from 1984-88, 5 summers and 75,000 kms
1980 Yamaha IT250 back into trail riding in 1987, collar bone is 1st and only bone I ever broke.
1987 Honda CBR1000F Hurricane - from the Turbo to the big hurricane - rode from 1989-94 probably another 75,000 kms, even rode it to Mexico
1982 XJ650RJ Seca bought this in 1990 to propel a new Velorex sidecar I bought. I still have this combo today but with many mods - 911cc 5-valve liquid, appeared in Cycle Canada in 1993.
1991 Yamaha DT200R bought new in 92 and started competing in enduros on it
1992 Yamaha WR200R bought a more competitive enduro bike, this was my dirt bike until 2004
1992 Honda ST1100 in 95 I replaced the hurc with something better for touring, rode until 2010 and logged 120,000 kms
1989 Kawasaki KLR650 - 1st real adventure tourer aquired in 98
1997 Kawasaki KLR650 - upgrade from the 89, also bought in 98 logged 40,000 kms another trip into Mexico, also 1st foray into road racing track days, kept until '04
2000 Honda VTR1000 Firestorm bought new in 2000, started doing more track days on this one
2003 Suzuki DRZ125L & 2000 Honda XR100 - got married and traded the VTR in 2002 for wife and step-son bikes
1985 Yamaha RZ350 - bought a dedicated track bike in 2003
1989 Yamaha FZR600 - upgraded track only bike in 2003, loved riding this at Mosport, incredible experience
2005 KTM EXC525 - bought in fall of 2004 and still own today, rode competition enduros and road race track days in supermoto trim, also my dualsport
1998 Suzuki RM80 - just an upgrade for the kid's XR100
2001 Suzuki DR200 - bought for the kid in 2006 but he never rode it, I rode it alongside the mini bikes teaching nephews to ride
2009 Suzuki GSF1250 Bandit-S finally replaced the ST1100 tourer in 2010. The 1st real Suzy I bought for myself. logged 20,000 kms in 2 yrs
1967 BSA 441 Victor - "the Victim" basket case bought in 2011 and completed restoration in 2015, still have today
2006 Yamaha MT-01 traded the 1250 Suzy for it in 2012. This one I regret selling as they are oh-so rare, can't be more than a handful in NA as USA never got em, logged 20,000 kms on that one
1988 Yamaha FZ600 bought this in 2013 and spent too much time fixing it. Sold it last summer in 2021 after I realized I don't fit on it anymore.
2000 Kawasaki KLR650 bought in 2014, bit of a beater but realized how much I missed having one
2015 Kawasaki KLR650 bought in 2015 to replace the beater. Still have today and this is my everyday rider and touring bike.
1982 Yamaha XJ650LJ Turbo - full circle to the beginning LOL, bought in 2017 and 5 years to today I have it completed and riding it now.
2007 Suzuki DRZ125 bought for son #2 in 2017. He had the small wheel and I rode the big wheel I bought earlier for the wife.
2003 Kawasaki KDX220 - replaced the kids DRZ to a real bike in 2020.

 

Good list! Amazing you have done all that, including racing on and off road, and only suffered one broken bone I have broken more than 50 bones, plus muscle, nerve and internal damage. Without racing. My speed has too often been too high for my limited talent

 

I have 3 more which could be added, riding in your beautiful Norway.
84 Honda Interceptor belonged to my brother which I rode in BC and Alberta for several thousand kms.
He moved to Stavanger, Norway and I put more miles on it there.
I rented an XJ900 Diversion in Norway and did about 5,000 kms in a week riding your countryside.
Then had a Ducati ST2 for a few days there also.

The same brother borrowed a CX500 for me one time. We rode from Calgary to California and up the coastal highway.
I remember crossing Nevada at red-line for several hours, what a slug of a bike.

 

Being my first big bike, I have fond memories of my CX500. But I think I would be disappointed if I tried one today. Mine was fast and would do an indicated 117 mph. None of the one I rode later went nearly as well. Handling and stability was dangerous on all.

Does your brother still live in Norway?

 

He does. Unfortunately he is in his last days with cancer. I was fortunate to visit him in March of this year. They are on lake Mjosa just south of Gjovik

I am also member of a KZ650 forum, and one on there still has, and use, his 1977 KZ650C that he bought new. Now in his mid-80s, it is still only his second bike ever, his first a BSA350.

Oh, and how did you end up after the head-on collision?

Good, pretty much walked away from it. Started having issues with the hip I slammed into the handle bars about a year later. Covid delayed a diagnosis but I ended up having a total hip replacement this year. Would be hard to prove but at 42 it's odd to need a hip and the no 1 cause of my damage is trauma.

 

during the course of restoring my 441 BSA I met a guy online who supplied me some parts. He’s in his 70’s, bought a 441 new and hasn’t ridden anything but BSA unit singles ever since. He has to have the world’s largest collection of parts for them. After he had about a dozen of them his wife started complaining but never said anything about him bringing parts home. He said he became quite proficient at stripping the bikes down at the last interchange to his home LOL

 

Sorry to hear about your need for a new hip, Jay. My aunt got a new hip when she was about your age, maybe 5 years older. Still holding up fine today. She's 87. So chances are you will not suffer much from the "upgrade".

 

Yah don't remind me, was time to start family/buy house/etc. but I did sell for 10X what I paid for it. Wasn't the best handling bike but the straight line speed and sound was unforgettable. There is a great video on YouTube "So far so fast" that really captures that sound.
