No 4th and 5th gear

    yamaha xj 750 Cann not get bike to go into 4th or fth gear. 1st N 2nd 3rd only. Ideas?

    Possible the cam chain guide is breaking up and a piece is jamming up the shift drum is one possibility, the other is the great selector behind the left side cover has an issue . The only way to find out is if it is chain guide is drop the exhaust , drain the oil and remove the oil sump and see if pieces are in sump. You can look into the bottom of the engine with a strong light you MIGHT be able to see if there is a piece in the gears . If this is the case it is not the end of the world but case will need to be split and if so the starter clutch should be rebuilt at same time.

    If you watch this video it will give you and idea of engine assembly. There is one on disassembly too. Chain guide is visible 4.07 minutes in @Mezzmo video on YouTube where you can see the guide in place. Need to check the cam guide too as @Jetfixer suggested.
