Geez, that depends.....how much the bike in question gets used, what sort of shape it was in to begin with, that sort of thing. I would guess $25 per oil change every 3k miles (or so) at least $200 per set of tires every 15k miles or so (ish), $100 for a battery every few years. And then there is gas.... Not even a guess at that. Smart motorcyclists don't think about what they are spending to keep riding.

I would take the cost of the all common maintenance items and spread them out over some number of years - maybe 10 or 20 (??).

All the usual suspects - oil and filters, tires, batteries, brakes, brake lines, master cyl, clutch, forks, bearings, valve adjustments, clutch and throttle cables, speedo cable, carb rebuilds, etc.

Add all that up, average it out over some period of time, and that should, in theory, tell you what you should budget annually for maintenance. Some years would be just oil and filter, some years would be big projects.

I'm going to guess that for most XJs, that depending on the model and how you ride, better budget $200-$300 per year. Just a SWAG at this point.

Of course in reality we don't usually get the luxury of starting with a pristine machine and managing all the maintenance and repairs as needed. We usually start with a machine that needs a good amount of work up front. Once all of the "deferred maintenance" is completed, your average annual spend should be lower until you start needing to replace things again.
