I was cleaning out my boxes of spare parts, and this was in my xj750 box (maxim)

I like things to be correct, and i dont have any boot on my battery cables, so I thought this must be for the maxim. I tried to figure out how it might go on but nothing made sense to me.

for fun i also did an ebay search for xj750 battery cables and i did see this part with some cables.

So is it for my 82 maxim? how does it go?

Doesn't look familiar to me - but that doesn't mean much.

Definitely looks like some sort of battery terminal cover.

    Google image search: Nothing.
XJ750 parts images: Nothing that seems to match.

It is a mystery - but I'm leaning toward not being from an XJ750.

Some have it, some don’t……depends on the configuration of your positive cable, and where your battery terminal is.

XJ750 Maxim positive battery cable cover (at battery). The XJ750's uses a "terminal extender bar" that attaches to the positive battery post, and which move the attachment point for the positive cable lug away from the battery post.......which is why this cover is so odd shaped. The terminal extender bar is just a flat, thin piece of metal, sorta-kinda "L"-shaped (just like the cover) and that long L-shaped cover surrounds that extension bar (it carries 12V, after all).

Only used on XJ750 Maxim models 1982-84.

hmm now i need to look closer. i think i used to have some kind of extension bar on the positive.....

i dont throw things away much, im going to have another look in my boxes. i feel like (this was like 12 or 14 years ago) i saw that and though it was a hack and maybe removed it. or i could be thinking of a different bike, more than a few have moved through my hands in that time.

another thing i might be missing is the battery fluid level sensor. I had one when i got it, then switched to a sealed battery and defeated the warning indicator. but have since gone back to a wet battery and should prob put that back in. but where is it? likely with that extension bar i bet! and here i was thinking i was pretty organized.

Be aware of a couple of issues:

    a) some batteries, although these accept threaded caps (and the sensor), don't have the same threads as the original Yuasa batteries.

    b) some batteries have a different plate height, and you do not want the tip of the sensor touching a plate. If that is the case, then you can (within limits) use a spacer washer under the "head" of the sensor to lift it off the plates and create clearance.
