Plastic bits in the oil pan (XJ750J)

    Pulled my oil pan today and found a plastic chunk. The starter chain seems very slack too. Internals seem very clean otherwise. Based on what I've read here, it seems like I need a new starter chain and guide. Appreciate comments . . .

    If you have to split the cases check the starter clutch hub for cracks, check the springs and rollers, the oil spray nozzle and heat the bolts holding the old guide to soften the factory threadlock. I stripped the whole motor replaced starter/alternator chain and guide, cam chain, starter clutch rollers and springs. Dan is right if you have some experience of repairs it is not that difficult, just a bit of work.

    Thank you Dan and Franz for the advice and pics. This will be my first time digging into an engine this size (venturing into the street bike world from a motocross background). Hopefully the number of stuck fasteners will be minimal . . .

    Stuck fasteners? The first ones you will encounter are the the exhaust studs. VERY common for those to break when you attempt to remove them. Start soaking in PB Blaster, WD-40, ATF & Acetone solution, or all of the above now. Years and years of age and heat cycles do them no favors. The ones I have the most trouble with are on the carburetor side of the motor holding the carb isolators to the head. Good luck and start soaking now.

    Heat is your friend too. Unless you burn yourself. Don't do that. Just heat the aluminum.
