Title says it all, but here's a quick run down:

Maxim engine I bought off ebay for my seca (what a job..they are not the same mounting system) Purrs like a kitten, but drives like a nervous rat. Ok...so I exaggerated a bit, but it makes me a nervous rat in turn. Here's what it's doing:

-1st gear...smooth take off and an affirmative grab and acceleration. I like.
-2nd gear...affirmative grab, but somethings weird...pull in the clutch while decelerating and I can feel a vibration in the foot pegs and hear a gentle rattle from down below. Might be from the shift plate end, but sorta sounds the same from side to side. If I am in 2nd and give her hell on the throttle, she pulls all the way, but as soon as I decelerate either by engine braking (more dramatic vibration) or by pulling in the clutch, I hear and feel the issue...That sucks. 8O
-3rd gear...Way cool. to accommodate Pulls strong...no vibration, smooth..I likey again.
-4th check!!!! She's ready to roar.
-5th holding the power at 90+ no weirdness and sounds smooth when I tuck behind the fairing.

What the gosh golly gee wiz eh? :?

To further test things out for the sake of issue isolation, I can get her hauling burrow a bit in 2nd gear, pull in the clutch and then kill the engine and hear that rattle for lack of a better term. It's an even rattle that sorta resembles a wet card in the spokes a bit, only lower in pitch and with a detectable vibration. Click it up into 3rd and it goes away.

My hopefulness provides a theory that goes something like this:

I had to swap engine panels to accommodate the shifter arrangement my seca platform demands and in a moment of stupidity I did something in there and just need to adjust the widget holder to line up with the thingymewhatsit shaft right? :p

Well...Now I place myself at the mercy of all you all...fire away..PLEASE! What is it? How do I git er done?

Otherwise I know where you can get a seca with a spare engine with 800.00 of new parts on it  .....but you know I'm not going to give up that easy though...don't you?

Boy oh boy! This really steams my beans!

I'll take a crack at it but you gotta promise me you'll smooth out the coarse language! Thanks.
From the sounds of it, whatever it is that is messed up on your machine is exclusive to 2nd gear. This would indicate it is in the gearing since the clutch assembly and final drive is common.
How to get at it? You're not going to like it but I would split the case, a royal pain (but not impossible).
I do hate to be the bearer of bad news but there it is. I hope that a simple solution is found (try sourcing another engine for a running spare while you fix this one). Best of luck and let us know what you find.

I'm sure someone has a more creative analysis than replacing the engine which is already a replacement engine. Don't get me wrong...I'm thankful for any input and the language moderation, but hasn't anyone encountered this gosh darned issue and repaired it or at least know what may be going on? I know by searching the forums that the description of this issue is not the same as any other. It does not fall out of gear or resist going into it
If I gotta crack the engine...then what? I know I can stare at it and a manual long enough to figure it out on my own, but I just thought that I could give others a chance to share their experiences with me and the entire forum community by taking the time to document.

I am getting ready to crack my engine for a second gear problem, I will let you know how that works, if I can get my loaner engine to run. But short of splitting the case of replacement, the tranny cannot be worked on. Unlike other bikes, it cannot even be accessed by turning the bike upside down. There are threads that tell you how to "dress your dogs" with the engine still in with a dremel, but I doubt that your problem.

From your problem it sounds like a clutch issue all but it being exclusive to the second gear. If you are going to change your oil, pull the clutch cover and check it. It very easy to get to and if you are careful you can usually salvage the gasket quite easily. Just an issue to check before you are commited to a transmission job. I know it only happens in second gear, but I am trying to think of something that could be fixed without pullling the engine.

    Stephen.
