I need to replace the starter on my bike. I currently have a 1981 XJ650 Midnight Maxim. I found a starter for a 1982 XJ650. Would this starter work with my bike even though the starter is one year newer?

    Thanks!

Yes it would. All Xj650/700/750, and 900 starter motors interchange. However my recommendation is to buy the rebuild kit for your starter. Used starters almost always need to be cleaned out and have the brushes replaced (at a minimum). Unless yours is horribly damaged (windings shorted, case damaged, etc) then it's going to be less expensive to jsut refresh yours.

It is also wise to bench test your starter, the starting circuit, and load test the battery to be sure that there is not a problem elsewhere.
