How do I test the alternator and regulator? What tools do I need?

You need a multimeter and a Haynes manual. I can post pictures of the testing procedure when l get home.

Just looked it up on the Hayes Manual and have a multimeter. Will test it soon! Thanks!

The brushes have wear limit lines on them. Check them too.

If you get it started put the multimeter terminals on the battery terminals and rev the engine. Above 2000rpm if the charging system is working you should have about 14.4 volts.

Actually, the manual is pretty vague about testing them and assumes you know where the alternator/stator is. Where is it? I read it and now know that I need about 4 ohms +/- 10% for the alternator to be functioning. I tried to find the 2 pin and the 3 pin wires for testing and came up empty. I traced back from the battery but all the cords are covered in black electrical tape that looks relatively newish. None of the wires are rusted out or disconnected in any visible way to me, but I have a multimeter to test the ohms. It won't start up now even with a full battery after I charged it with a tender/maintainer/charger. The neutral light doesn't go on like it did yesterday. It started yesterday once when I jumped it, but otherwise it wouldn't idle and cranks down to zero rpms fast.

If you have pictures of the testing procedure that would be amazing. I know to check each 3 pin connection together with both pos and neg and also the 2 pin, but can't find them.

My XJ650J has a fuel gauge. It's the tripmeter.
