Last year I synched the carbs on an 82 xj 650 Maxim with two bottles, it worked well.
This year I want to synch the carbs on an 83 kz1100 with two bottles. I can't remember
    the sequence . Was it 3 to 4 then 1 to 3 then 2 to 1 ?

Synch 1 to 2, then 4 to 3, then the pairs to each other.

You can also synch 4 to 3, then 1 to 2, and then the pairs to each other.

Depends which carb is the one to sync everything to.

Still be the same procedure, but just know which carb is your baseline carb

From research at a few KZ forums I learned that you synch the other three carbs to the cylinder with the lowest compression. In this case it
    would be number 3 anyway

the sync does that with out you knowing which is the lowest cylinder.

from chacals post in the thread read it all it is very informitive
    THE SECRET LIFE OF CARBURETORS

".....And if you recall (or will discover, if you have not already learned) that the entire "engine synch" process is really about "tuning down" (reducing the output of) each cylinder down to the output of the weakest cylinder! So weaker vacuum signals in a particular cylinder----caused by valve shim clearance issues on a particular cylinder-----causes you to further decrease the entire engine's output during the synch process as you "down tune" the good cylinders to the performance of the worst cylinder......"

You end up doing that by nature of balancing

    ^^exactly^^

The baseline carb will always be the one that is controlled by the idle speed screw, because that one has no synch screw.

I did the kz 1100ltd today with the two bottle method. It was really easy and the bike ran much
better. And yes, I did trade out valve shims first, and after cleaning the carbs I wet set the float levels.
A tip to all the newbies. install the throttle and choke cables before sliding the carbs into the engine boots.

LOL, I have a 750LTD and I can't tell you how many times I've put the carbs on without that cables.
