assuming the oil was done every 3k. How long should the stator last? Also does a light come on the speedometer when the engine overheats? Any thing else likely to fail in the near future? thanks

Alternator BRUSHES are the "wear" item, they supposedly need replacing every 10K but mine (on a 550) are still OK at 25K.

Is it a watercooled or aircooled bike?

YES; all sorts of stuff to watch for/fix. But that depends on the bike.

    More info please.

you never mentioned anything about adjusting the valves... check those, and nothing except the brushes need changed until 60K- the cam chain needs to be changed

I'm not quite sure what frequent oil changes have to do with the condition of the Alternator Stator. But, you need to protect the Alternator and Rotor.

Any Bike with "Daytime Running Lights" should have the Alternator Brushes checked for being in Specs.
