Not something that comes up for sale every day, looks pretty cool, I'd pick it up if I had the spare cash even though it doesent get all too hot around here.

    Look at this on eBay:

81 Yamaha XJ550R XJ 550 Seca oil cooler

I saw that earlier. Looks like a home-made POS. I would sooner spring for a good aftermarket cooler and adapt it.

That IS (ok, was) a "good aftermarket" cooler; it's a Derale Brand.

The flange is an XJ-looking flange.

It probably DID come off a Seca 550; but it is also obviously somebody's homemade lash-up.

My XJ550 manual shows the model having an oil cooler. If I may ask then, did that one with the European model or Yamaha originally planned and it and then dropped it?

If a person wanted to put one on an American bike, what's the best option?

The Euro-market 550s got them, we never did.

Except for the upper mounting bracket, one from an FJ/FZ 600 is pretty much a straight bolt-up. I have one myself that I haven't installed yet.

    So did the Oz/NZ bikes

Does the American frame have the brackets on them for the cooler to attach to?

Nope. Remember about 3 or 4 years ago I had you get me pics of the upper mounting post?

See if you can find those pics again and post them, if you would. I'll look too.

heres the original (to my knowledge anyway),

Peg upwards with rubber bushing and 2x m4 bolts with rubber bushings below the radiator.
