'82 1100 Maxim suddenly won't shift

    Shift lever moves freely up and down and is not actually causing a shift. i tried rocking the bije back and forth in whatever gear it's in(Pretty sure it's second cause i can get it to start if i roll it) but its not engaging any gears. I rode it away from work and then 500 feet into my ride home it just stop shifting. I'm fairly new so if you could break down any answers like you're explaining to a child that would be great lol.
    I've read it might be a c-clip/circlip/circle clip? if it is how can i find out how to replace it and what tools will i need?

    Drain the oil.
    Remove the shift lever.
    Remove the shift cover.
    Look at the shift mechanism for a broken spring.

    Okay I've drained the oil and removed all the bolts but for some reason the plate isn't budging, any ideas?

    Now, I am not saying that this is what I think, know, or have heard to be true, but....

    Someone may or may not have had this issue in the past and, after giving her the old tap tap taperoo for a week, decided "F it" and used a putty knife to !!EXTREMELY GENTLY!! tap it into the gasket material to separate it. I did not That someone did not leave any marks on the clutch cover, YMMV.

    On the left you'll see a kind of star-shaped wheel (the shift drum). In front of that wheel is the shifting pawl. The pawl engages the shift drum, and has a spring on it to allow the pawl to both engage with and disengage from the shift drum when the shift lever is moved. There is a spring on that pawl. Is it intact and connected at both ends?

    There is also a spring on the shift shaft. Is that Intact?

    Hold on....
    I thought something looked funny. The shift pawl is.....umm.....not in the correct orientation at all. The hooked end should be over the shift drum, not facing the rear of the engine.

    It looks to me like the shaft to the 2nd shift lever (the bit with the teeth) has split in twain. No bueno.

    Unfortunately the 2nd shift lever is NLA from Yamaha. You could start a conversation with Chacal to see if he might have one, otherwise put a post in the wanted section both here, and at XS11.com (the part is the same as on the xs1100), and search Ebay.

    In that diagram are you talking about the top part or the bottom part that's not how it should be? What number specifically? Sorry I'm not good with terminology

    Sorry. #26 is the shift pawl. #28 is the 2nd shift lever.

    Was the way it was in the first set of photos the way you found it when you pulled the cover?

    No, the shifter used to move freely(but not engage) but now it's not moving at all. Is this progress? Lol
