See my new project bike in this thread:

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=19272.html

What the heck is it? Pics I find say it's a Maxim ans the Seca has a different look. Went to advance Auto and Maxim model pulled up BP7ES plugs ( knew that was not right as I have those for my 650). The Seca model pulled up DR8ES. I believe their DB is wrong for the maxim model but I'm not sure.

Any help is appreciated. I have some other pics I can post if needed

They are particularly the same bike, at least mechanically. Therefore, they share a lot of the same parts.

Bill; You've got a "baby" Maxim. The Seca looked kind of like the XV500 Vision without the fairing, styling-wise.

BP7ES are not 12mm plugs as you found out; here's the problem you're going to have: The aftermarket only knows about the "other" XS400.

In 1982 Yamaha sold THREE different XS400s here: The XS400J (what you have) the XS400RJ (it's "mate" the Seca) and the XS400SJ which was the old original SOHC twin-shock little brother to the XS650.

Your bike and the Seca are "half an XJ" motors; DOHC with shim-over-bucket valves, etc. and have the monoshock frame. These are the cool XS400s. The aftermarket missed these bikes almost completely. Almost everything you will find is for the old-style 400 twin. That bike had traditional twin rear shocks and the SOHC motor with rocker-adjusted valves. It had been around since the mid '70s and is the only XS400 the aftermarket seemed to recognize.

Thanks Fitz I saw the older version info out there. When I saw the plugs I told the guy this ain't right. I knew my 650 was 14mm plugs and the XS was 12mm.

Cool thing is they share the same oil filter.

THERE you go! Thanks, DW, I can use that myself.

Notice all the pics are the "Seca" the only style the rest of the world knew...

They share all sorts of stuff with the 550s Bill; same spark plugs, oil filter, valve shims; you use the same shim tool, etc.

And no rear drive oil to change...

Yea I found that manual Wednesday - helped me get it running. The pics had me wondering too. I found 2 title services have to talk to them and see if they can help.

I have a paper copy of the manual (in english and french...what a pain) and ALL the pics are of the Seca.... although it states Maxim and Seca, lol

I'd like to try a baby Seca for the 6th gear, find myself wishing for one more on the highway at times......
