There was only one flavor of XJ900 made, until the Diversion (which NA never got).

Ye the Diversons were popular in Europe. A lot of them for sale here on E Bay but my nephew is after my 900f which I don't mind him getting but he will have to wait until I am old. His friend has a Diversion at work so my nephew will have to start with a 125cc and take it from there, do his theory test and riding test. When I passed my test I had a Suzuki GT 250, and there was no theory test although we had to know The Highway Code. The Haynes manual stated the early 900f which was 853cc if my memory serves me correctly had handling problems and Yamaha redesigned it with the fairing mounted on the frame instead of the handlebars and they increased the capacity of the engine too.

I’ll be able to swap out a really nice tank, but it’s gonna be tough or expensive to find a fairing in the condition I’ll be needing

Do you think one of those paintless dent repair guys could save the tank? Some amazing stuff was done to my pick up truck after hail damage. For the cost and availability of these tanks it might be worth investigating.

The tank could routinely repaired. Just pull the big dent with those weld on "nails'' and slide hammer. My tank had a similar dent now it's gone took my friend (has a shop) ten minutes to pull it out.
If I saw that tank for sale at a swap meet I'd buy it in a flash.
    Cheers, 50gary

I just wondered since they can fail in that area and you did welding with the shock absorber mount you repaired.

I didn’t do any welding there. Someone had broken the end off of the shock mount, then THEIR solution was to weld the shock to the mount. I ground the weld apart then came up with a proper solution.
