    just doublechecking -
after breaking them down and cleaning, I'm putting hitachi carbs from an xj650 maxim back together the way they were, based on pictures taken during disassembly.
I'm noticing a few discrepancies... the Haynes manual specifies that the T transfer pipe (fuel rail?) fits between carbs 1 and 2 -
the PO had the T pipe placed between 3 and 4 and the bike ran pretty well in this configuration, so I'm guessing its not too important.
    anyone know otherwise?

Mine is between 1&2. Left side of the bike incase you're counting backwards. That's where the fuel valve is. You want the shortest line possible.

that makes sense - just to prevent tangles or is it a function thing?

Long hose is easier to kink. Plus If it runs all the way to the other side and springs a leak, gas all over your hot motor instead of just part.

It was just cheaper to run a shorter hose thats all does not matter where it is Multiply the extra length of hose by 500,000 lots of hose

Confirmed: the factory book shows it between #1 and #2 on the 650.

On the 550s it's in the center between 2 and 3.

On the big bikes, the vacuum line comes off the #3 intake boot.

On the 550s the vacuum line comes off #2.

I certainly can't see that it makes a difference in either case (except the XJ600s that had #2 carb jetted differently.)

Apparently Yamaha did. We're just guessing at the reasons.
