To get a close start I have used metal twist ties. With the carbs off the bike insert the metal wire from the tie and adjust the sync screws so you can just pull it out with a small amount of resistance. Continue with each carb as outlined in the repair manuals or cds. This will allow you to get close and you can start up the bike. I have read that you are to perform valve clearence checks first though. After you start up you can then get a finer sync using the carb sticks (ie carbtune).

Glen is referring to rough syching the throttle butterflies with the twisty ties, I believe. This will give you a rough idea of the space when the thing is almost closed.

Warning: Your bread could dry out from this!

It depends on wich sets of carbs you have. If I remember right, you have an 85 XJ700N?, same as mine.
These are Hitachi VC carbs and bench syncing them will really not help you.
You do need to adjust the vale train first. This requires a special tool that is proving to be difficult to find. All my supliers have it listed as discontinued. XJ OWNERS has a loaner I have heard.
If it is a YICS motor, you will need a special tool for this as well. You can make one or buy one.
To do it properly, you will also need to adjust your mixture as well. Morgan carb-tune would be recomended. Even buying the carb-tune, the YICS tool and the valve tool will be cheaper than having it done.
Best to get everything first before even attempting it.

Which one? I don't see one for $13.95. Do you have a direct link?

It might be worth posting in our Links section

I was reffering to Capy's statement that the valves needed to be adjusted first and that the tool needed to change the shims was hard to find. This is the tool for changing the shims, not the yics tool.
