Thanks everyone so far for helping me with this!!! This site has been amazing and i just joined. XJBikes was referred to me by a friend and i will continue to forward to other XJ enthusiasts (sp). Onto my next issue:

I need to get a carb rebuild kit and jet kit. I dont know what KINDS to get This is my first time. I have an 82 650 Maxim and will be riding it with open hearders and will also be purchasing pod filtrers and new manifold boots.

I have to carbs off and all i have to do is seperate them so its ready for the cleaning. I would like to have the kits before i dip the carbs.

    Thanks again,

    Sonny.

Chacal can hook you up with parts.

Be sure to strip them down completely before dipping. I hear that plastic parts don't fare well when dipped.

Depends on the dip, too. some plastics are fine with the dip, and others will melt or totally dissollve. Many of the rubber parts will also dissolve, while some will swell up and get mushy, others will be fine. You have to be willing to sacrifice some old parts to find out.

For example: I know with the dip that I use, the o-rings will swell up, but the plastic collar on the main needle, and the threaded plug atop the needle (inside the piston) are not affected by the dip. The rubber tip on the needles will swell and soften to the point where they fall right off, but the bowl gasket is totally unfazed by it.

Your mileage may very well vary, depending on what you use.

I recall finding a handy little chart that gave estimates of the jet sizes to use depending on what's been done to the engine. I'll dig around my computer and post it if I find it. I'm going to need it pretty soon myself. haha
