I just installed a new exhaust (with much cursing and one squashed and bleeding finger) & discovered a spot of peeling chrome. The exhausts have been sitting around for a couple of years & are in otherwise pristine condition.
So the question is, can this be treated with paint or do I need to get the exhaust re-chromed? It's right under the engine so I'm thinking grey or silver high-heat paint might be ok.

Sorry, not sure what to do about the peeling chrome but am interested to know about the bike and exhaust system. What model is the bike and what make is the exhaust system, thank you.

Hi David, the bike is a 1980 XJ650 Seca, exhaust was custom-built by Cycleworks in Wellington. It's going to be loud!
A bit of useless information, the same person built an exhaust system for my first XJ650 in about 1987.

A touch of paint won't hurt, but it's not really needed. Just remember that you'll have to scrub the rust off occasionally.

Thank you, that's one nice looking bike in the making.

I've just fired up a thread to ask the question whether or not my XJ650 UK model is the same as a Seca.

A bit of paint as you suggested and it will be fine. I would carefully remove the bubbled chrome by cutting around it. Reason is some rust might occur under the bubble. Remember to have rust you must have both air and moisture, removing one means there cannot be rust.

Thanks I'll do that, was concerned rust would get under the chrome & start spreading.
