I have a 1982 Yamaha XJ550 Maxim. I The clutch needs to be replaced. Generally does one need to replace all of the clutch components or just the friction plates? How long can I expect the project to take? I have never changed the clutch on a motorcycle and would like some input on the subject before I tear into it. I would feel better if I some guidance from someone who has already done the same job.

Out of curiosity where did you buy the springs for your clutch? I found a new set of friction plates for $35. Also if I do need to replace the metal plates do you know where I could find those?

Check with Len for the parts you need. He has them all. Shipping is really fast also. I just got some parts and had them within a couple of days. Just click on the link at the top of the page and go from there. He will hook you up.

He's referring to XJ4Ever, our resident parts source. The link is the big logo upper right in the banner.

Is there a point after so many miles when you should service/change the clutch parts? I mean even if you are not having a problem.

Not really. These motors make enough power, you'll have plenty of "warning" when it's getting to be time. They start to exhibit mild slippage in the higher gears; nothing to make the bike unrideable (unless you have an out-and-out failure) but enough to notice and immediately know what it is.

Clutch life can vary greatly depending on riding style, but with an older bike like these, the clutch will start to slip before it's "worn" out. You'll know.

OK thanks Fitz. I may change the clutch springs and bolts anyway. I've seen a number of XJ's within an hours drive of my place for sale. Everything from a XJ500 up to an XJ1100 all for under $500. I'm starting to drool. Saw a 82 Seca 500 in Ottawa looked like new, the guy let it go for $200!!! But I'm going to see if I can pickup a XJ**0 MK first. Bit I think I'll keep my eye on the 1100.
