It is my understanding that the firing order for XJ's is 1-2-4-3.
Does that mean that, on my '82 XJ650, the left coil (1/4) connects to the 1st and 3rd cylinder and the right coil(2/3) connects to the 2nd and 4th cylinder?

The original coils were dead so I put in some from a 1993 Suzuki 750 Katana...they were here so I used them...there is spark at all 4 plugs...thoughts?

One coil is for 1-4 other is for 2-3
Many bikes have a "wasted" spark that fires on exhaust stroke.

OK, so, to be clear, facing forward the cylinders are 1-2-3-4.....the left coil connects to the 1st and 4th cylinders (the outside two) and the right coil connects to the 2nd and 3rd cylinders (the inside two)?
(thank you for your help and my apologies if I appear 'slow' lol)

Yes .Orange red /white wire is for 2/3 coil and grey , red/white for 1/4 coil
Not slow just careful, many a costly mistake made by rushing to fix and not asking for help
