    hi all,
I'm in the middle of redoing all the wiring on my xj600, (no problem with that for me), but-----
has anyone tried to remove the round multi pin connector pins, from the plastic housing?.
there are special tools available to extract "molex" pins ,as used on computer plugs, but are they the same
pins , I've got new pins to put on the shortened wires, but need to get the old pins out without damaging the plastic. new pins are 2.63mm round
the motorcycle specific tools are quite expensive
anyone know of a makeshift, easily obtainable alternative
    cheers
    stu

I have used a piece of small brass tubing from the hobby store. Find one that fits snug over the pins( so it can depress the tangs) and will allow you can pull the wire out. Radio shack has a tool for this but it might not be the right size.

Unfortunately, not for the round pins, we were never able to find a store-bought version and had to fabricate one such as what mlew suggests...

I'm sorry. I probably shouldn't have even muddied the waters. I have a lathe and made mine out of a short piece of brass rod. Works great but you need a lathe. :)

oh, I see rice, if I draw a blank at the hobby shop, i'll probably cut both plug and socket off and replace with a 10 way spade type plug and socket, as they're not too expensive.
    cheers

Yeah, I'm sorry. I shouldn't even brought it up.

Take one of the new pins with you to the hobby shop to use as a test piece for something that fits just snug on the outside of the pin. If you find something close, you could always drill the ID out a little and/or file down the OD a little to fit down in the recess in the plastic housing.

And one other idea is that if you don't care about damaging the old pins, you can probably stick a pin down inside the recess and manually bend the retainer tang(s) out of the way without messing up the plastic housing. I wouldn't want to do a whole bunch of pins like that, but for just a few connections it wouldn't be too bad.

Lastly (academic only), but I'd bet there's nothing Molex on these bikes... I bet they are either Sumitomo or Yazaki.

SORTED!!--- so, I stumbled across the perfect fit to use as a tool, from a household window spray bottle,

the suction tube from the bottle fits the pins and is just stiff enough to push the barbs in.

hope this my help someone else trying to remove the pins

Just saw this. I used a piece of brass tubing from the hobby shop and made my own as well. (Years ago.)

Truth be told, my "other hobby" is scale modeling and I have a stash of brass tubing so it didn't require a special trip to the LHS.
