I'll weigh in on a brief opportunity to edit one's postings (goodness knows I used it occationally when we could use it). A week should be ample IMHO.

How about letting the Moderator edit the TOPIC of the Post to more accurately describe the new discussion.

    All too frequently we're seeing:

    "Need Help"
    "NewB Question"
"Stupid Question" (There are NO stupid questions ... just the one you don't ask.)
"Can somebody help me?" (They've tried to help me ... I'm a hopeless case.)
    "My Bike has a problem"

The Moderator could evaluate the issue and assign a more appropriate Heading.
    "New Member with Seized Brakes.
"New Member. Needs Oil Change Instruction"
    "Unusual noise detected in engine"
    "Straight Jacket needed ASAP"

    Or not.

Yeah that is a good idea. A lot of questions have been asked before, but sometimes people in a hurry scan the titles and never even look into the thread.

I was on one forum where it was fun to bash newbs, so people tended to lurk and whenever they asked questions they would get railed about "how to use the search button", so I think people are just afraid.

Don't be afraid, we are a great bunch. I still call my mother once a week!

So basically it seems to be a concensus that the Editing ability is strongly desired to come back, and now we're just discussing to what extent and ability....

How about we just turn the default editing ability back on for a while and give a second chance to those that are here?

Because there are over 1,000 here now.

We don't need 1,000 new Librarians ... we just need a few in the Reference Section, to keep the books and stories on the right shelves.

That's a ridiculous claim - there may be over 1000 members now, but each of them deserves the right to be able to edit his/her own posts.

Moderators to keep posting titles on track - okay, I get that - works for me.

But I still say everyone should be able to go back and edit their post title or body anytime they see fit.
One concession I've seen before could be a mandatory line that gets added whenever you edit a post that says "last edited by xxxxx on xx date"

Make perfectly good sense stated that way.

I wouldn't want to have anyone edit my Posts. But I'd like to add a few words to previous Posts to clarify a few details that seem to have confused a few people.

    I get the picture, now!
    Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Editing posts and or titles of threads after they are po

By popular demand, I have re-instated the full Edit functionality. But I will be working on making the Edit a time delayed feature. This way X number of days after the post, the Edit will no longer be available. Does this sound fair?

Even 1 day would be enough... the idea is that you get time to fix a mistake but after that it can't be changed. Otherwise you can rewrite history, and that's just weird/risky.

    Excellent, Sno!

I'm thinking 3-5 days would be great for the opportunity to make corrections. Beyond that, the principal of editing is lost.

    Very fair - thanks!

Why is it we can proof read our posts -- over and over -- but, dont seem to find that glaring error until after the Submit button is clicked and we read what we just proofed added to the thread.

A little window of editing time is going to be welcomed by everybody, I should expect.

    Excellent.

Agreed. A short lead time should be all that is necessary.

Re: Editing posts and or titles of threads after they are po

    Wohoo!

Way back when someone started a thread about why we own XJs. I replied with my reasons, including that I had liked an '82 Shadow and new that was the type bike I wanted. Actually it was an '82 Nighthawk.

    I fixed my post!

Now I can sleep at night.

After thinking this over, 1 day should be plenty of time to catch and make changes.

If I had edited my last post and added the above line...
    a) it would have been lost/missed unless you read the entire thread
    b) any posts referencing my comments would now be messed up and the reader would be wondering what is going on!
