Here's a quick peek at a cross-section of xj650 boots. It's amazing how thick they really are.

I have some from either a 700X, or a 900rk ( on the shelf somewhere...I don't remember which at the moment---) and i will take post those here later. They have a metal liner.

Well made, that's for sure, and consider how long they last. The ones on my Kawasaki are also very good.

It would be interesting to compare the knockoff versions of the boots to this.

Have found that most of the boots with cracks on the outside and almost never go all the way through, but leaks occur at the gasket and mating surface has cracked, which can be cured with rtv.

That's good to know! The ones on my 550 are looking a little rough.

I know you guys said not to but I couldn't resist... I've been running the knockoffs for almost a year with zero problems.

That said, I still have my old ones handy to coat and put back on once these start failing...

That's fine. If they hold up for you, that's awesome, too.

My reason for this is that there have been some reports of boots collapsing under vacuum, or layers coming off and blocking intake. I wanted to compare thickness and quality of the materials. Not saying that the other ones don't work, I simply want to see any differences.

They look identical. The thickess is the same. I've had mine on for a bit over 10,000 miles and they are perfectly fine so far. I think the delamination troubles may have been down to a poorly made batch. I can probalby take pics when I have the head back off to fix my mistake. I'm not sure how long it will be until I can get to that job though.

If your boots are starting to crack, a light coat of grease or petroleum jelly will keep them from getting horribly worse and save em for a while, not a fix, but will lengthen life.
