Just putting some fresh bearings in the 550's front wheel. I noticed the central spacer has a little cap/pressed on washer at one end...but only after the spacer had dropped out of the wheel. Does it matter which way it goes back in?

Sort of. The original is slightly larger than the replacement part, so if installing the original then yes. The replacement is smaller-enough that it could go in either way; but if installed "backward" would defeat it's purpose.

What that flange is for: It's only there to support the spacer on one end so that the axle can be inserted easily. The flange-equipped end goes toward whichever side of the hub the axle is coming in from.
