I torqued down the acorn nuts on the head after installing the jugs and head on new base/ head gaskets
to the specified torque setting of 23.1 ft lbs. In The Haynes manual, I didn't read anywhere to use sealer.
But later when I viewed several old posts on this forum, several guys mentioned using copper spray on those
gaskets. Will base/head gaskets fail if installed bare without copper spray?

Nope. I like to use a smear of oil on paper/fibre gaskets. Don't think you need anything on the head gasket though.

+1 you’re good on the head gasket. Copper spray is okay if you are attempting to reuse one but new it goes on dry.
