    Here's a good one:
    fully charged & new battery
clean contacts for start button, solenoid
    "new" reconditioned starter
cleaned carbs (done by friend...don't know exactly HOW clean)

Key in/run...try try no turnover (repeat three times, wait in between so you don't flood it)
Key in/run...try pthhhh (which usually meant it was about ready to turnover)
    nothin.

wait, try again. Starter button depressed, try try...starter button let go...it's still trying. run button clicked off...it's still trying.
    key out...it's still trying.

    negative lead off of battery....stopped
Now I'm afraid of electrocuting myself and of course...
    ruining my new battery.
    What can I touch?
    What should I do next?
    thanks, all

it wont flood if it isn't turning over.
12 volts won't electricute you. can burn if shorted out.

your solenoid is stuck closed, give it a good smack with a screwdriver handle
this might free it up, start looking for another one
the way it is now the two big terminals are connected, they shouldn't be

    tks, guys.
Jim. you're funny! You're the one who favors JPII in the electrical tutorial photos, or am I thinking of some other R.C.?
    ;-)
fuh duh...ok... so is the solenoid likely the rest of my starting problem with the "pthhhhh" sound creeping in there or might I have other issues besides the fact that I'm still so new at this? tks

    oh yah.
    right
So the the bike starts to make its noise (the noise immediately prior to the engine turning over) Then I get this noise (or I don't get this noise, depending on the moment in time and space) that sounds like a pulsing raspberry sound (the kind you can make with your tongue stuck out and lots of air coming from your gut..that's what I spelled "pthhhhh" After pulsing that sound a couple of times, it will usually turn over. This time, the solenoid got stuck.
    thanks
Really tough to describe sounds..I need to get a recording device;-)

ok, well now that the hunt is on for a solenoid, a general rule of motorcycle repair is any noise that starts with "pth", or "pft" gets smacked with a screwdriver
"eer" , "bzz" get oiled and "euu", "krr" need adjustments :)
and if you smell something burning while on your bike, it's not you, unless your at a red light
