Well I messed 'er up. Stripped the threads of the oil pan doing my oil change I can hardly believe it. Does anyone think I can Helicoil the hole so I can salvage this thing? If not, what are my options at this point? Am i replacing my entire sump?

    I'm bummin. :(

I don't see any reason a Helicoil would not work just fine....

OR you might see if Yamaha has an over sized drain plug available. If I remember correctly, helicoils are not cheap!

I can imagine. On the day I bought my bike I was installing a new ignition switch that came with it. Bolt sheared right off. Then I broke a cheap easy out in it. So I know how you feel. Luckily I know some machinists and they drilled it out and Helicoiled it for me.

Hang in there - very few things are not repairable or replaceable, sometimes the cost is more of an issue.

There are oversized oil drain plugs available from the HELP! parts line at most well stocked auto supply stores.
I would try that with a bit of teflon tape.

Is it so stripped that it can not be retapped? I know in car restoration I have cross-threaded bolts but have been able to salvage by tapping.

Thank-you all. Rick-O-Matic just posted a comprehensive reply to a related post of mine under work so far, etc.. Where I also mentioned my blunder.

I am going to attempt a helicoil asap. A local mechanic helped em at least stop the leak for today by delicately re-threading the drain plug with a couple of washers and an O-ring sandwiched between them, it's been run, and sitting for hours now without a drop of oil coming out.

Plan for now is to let the bike sit for a day or two and get the helicoil parts I need, then go at it with my Bro in law this weekend. I refuse to let my clumsiness ge the better of me.

You guys are great thanks a million. I'll definetly post back here to let you all know how this turns out.
