Hey all! My RPM needle didn't work as well as it should, was alittle sticky and such, and also some of my lights weren't working in my gauges. So I chose this cold day to take it apart and clean it.

Clean it i did, every bit of it, i even had a toothbush and q-tips. I shot these pictures in reverse, putting it back together. So all the parts would look clean. Hopefully it'll work when i lay it out for you.

I'll breifly touch on how to remove the gauges from the bike, if you need pics ask and i'll get them.

    Tools needed:
    10mm socket
    #1 Phillips
    #2 Phillips

1.) remove head-light cover, one bolt at the bottom
2.) remove each turnsignal pod, (3 bolts, 1 nut 1 washer 1 lockwasher per pod)
3.) remove windshield (4 bolts, two each side)
4.) remove gauge (two bolts, one each side)
    5.) disconnect wiring harnes
NOTE: You can either inspect / clean / repair connections now, or when you goto install the guages.

    Now to tear it apart.

1.) Remove two #2 phillips screws from dust shield
    [IMG]
2.) remove two 10mm nuts from mounting bracket (2 nuts 2 washers)
3.) disconnect warning & check gauge switches (
    [IMG]
    4.) remove warning light
    [IMG]
5.) remove 6 #2 phillips holding the gauge bezel on (3 top, 3 bottom)
6.) remove center boost cover (2 #1 phillips screws)
7.) remove digital gauges (4 #2 phillips screws)
8.) remove tach wires (3 screws, brown black grey wires)
9.) remove tach mounting screws (2 screws)
10.) now the tach can be removed from the front
    [IMG]
11.) remove two screws holding speedometer on (2 #2 phillips)
12.) You'll have to 'tilt' the speedometer forward to allow the angled speed-o-hub to slip through
    [IMG]
13.) next we can further disassemble the gauge bezel, you'd do this if you had to replace the plastic screen
    [IMG]

And there you have it, for the most part it's completely disassembled, minus removing the wiring harnesses and lamps.

Oh, I also plan on making custom gauge faces, as it's just plexiglass / plastic, and some paint. I just want it to fit with the bike more. atleast get rid of those lines and change the font.

    see set four...

mr condescending... you post to my threads like I am some sort of idiot.

No the bulb isn't missing from the WARNING light, it's right there, in plain site. you can see it in six of the 13 photos.

Thanks everyone elses for the good comments, I only did this so some guy in the future can find this site and get alittle visual help.

Photos make everything easier, atleast make the timid mechanics get their hands alittle bit dirty.

Also, it'd seem this was better placed in the XJ FAQ Suggestions area. Sorry i posted it here, it can be moved if mods deem fit

My mistake. No condescension implied. It's a well known fact that this light bothers the hell out of every turbo owner due to the constant flashing when the original battery is replaced with one that doesn't have the proper fitting for the sensor i.e just about every battery available. 750 Seca owners will understand. Luckily, mine didn't work most of the time, but whenever it fixed itself it was a royal pain.

no problem just with some of your other posts, it seems like you think i'm just some teenager.

this light flashes, but hitting the warning button a few times clears it, i have two reasons, i think, no fuel and battery.

both of which are wires i have to repair. all lights work! i'm really thinking about doing some sort of LED conversion.

So, I can just unplug my WARNING! bulb and there's no ill effects? Or will the dash computer hate me? (like display the wrong fuel level?) PO covered it with tape. . .

nope, this is just a +12 line from the computer module (electronic gauges as i called them).
unplugging this only cuts the voltage to that light and would free up a few tiny milliamps of power.

Why is it on though? If it's the battery, you can short the battery across 12v somewhere and it'll go off, i've read where people use 2.2k or 4.4 /4.7k resistors to lower the voltage to protech the computer.

This bike came with some interesting electrical remedies. (rigged). Also front brake switch not working, intermittent "tail" warning, missing battery sensor and wires, main loom pinched between tank and a bracket, cutting into some wires, blue connectors, tape, missing start button, stock fuses, and a mystery switch.

I just sent off for the XJCD. The warning light has never stopped.
