Couldn't pass it up - Guy said it was a runner before he ebay'd the $$ bits -

    And the price? 40 bucks.....

Bought it for a spare engine, and then just part out the rest, maybe save the collector and headers, and hell why not the wheels, lol.

Then, im about to leave, and he asks if i want some extra yammie wheels -

and gave me a front swirly and then a rear spoked - looks to be off a 700.

Question - if desired, could i swap the fork tubes over to my 550 seca and then run dual discs? That would be pretty sick. I know i would have to find 750 calipers and a 750 seca mc with a bigger bore, but the first question, would be if they would even work? wheel-wise as well as length/etc/

Now i can polish up all the case covers and all that jazz and still be able to ride!!

And....picture soon to come.....I brought it home in my Escort wagon.... ahhahaha. priceless.

Answer to your question: Fork tubes are a different diameter, and the 750 Maxim calipers have something oddball about them that makes them expensive to rebuild, check Len's catalog.

Notice where the axle is on the Maxim forks, compared to your 550 Seca. You would be changing the front end geometry; I wouldn't recommend it.

Honestly, as light as the 550 Seca is it really doesn't need dual discs once you upgrade the original brake.

LOTS of good stuff there for only $40. Good strike.

Forty dollars well spent Chris. Too bad there isn't an instrument cluster. I need to repair both the headlight and Atari housing on mine. Replacing with unbroken ones would be easier.

    "guy said it ran before......."

I've heard all kind of 'it ran before...."

It ran before I parked it............under that pine tree 10yrs ago.
It ran before.............................I blew it up
It ran before...........................the guy that I bought it from bought it
It ran before...........................but it made some funny rattles
It ran before...........................I don't know why it won't start now
It ran before...........................that big rain storm
"It was running perfectly fine yesterday......I don't know how the brakes got so rusty overnight. The stopped good yesterday.

    etc........

But, yeah.........40 for a parts bike is good. I'd have grabbed it too. Good snag.

    Your 3rd XJ, Huh? Well..........that's a START. :)

When I brought my X home, the guy said that all four cylinders were firing. When I tried it, it barely idled at all and smoke was pouring out of the exhaust, and that on full choke.

When I broke down the carbs, it turned out at least two of the needles were stuck to the emulsion tubes...

Thanks for all the positive affirmation!

And yeah - its true that he "said" that it was running, but I figure, even if i just get to snag all of the engine covers and brake drum cover off to polish and then swap over to my 83 and not lose any riding time, thats plenty worth it to me. and plus, i have a gut feeling that he wasn't lying.

And thanks for the info on the forks fitz, sounds like i'll just let that idea go by un-done.

I DID make sure to smell the crankcase and it diddnt smell like gas, so thats a good sign that it wasant run into the ground flooded with fuel in the crank case.
