I've used in the past Continentals.....I know people here don't seem to like them....on my (couriered) XJ's, in the wet and windy UK, for HUNDREDS of thousands of miles, and loved them......however, that was eons ago, I'm currently on Michelins Pilot Activs....not the cheapest, but they seem MORE than capable of handling the XJ's 82HP, and my ...more relaxed, riding style......though i can still get the pegs down......not that difficult, on the low slung XJ, lol !!

Round, black, new, and in the correct size.

The Continental Conti-GO is a fine tire, unless you ride a lot. I wore out the rear in about 6,000 miles (the front is at about 30% after 12K). They have really good grip, even on wet roads (which probably explains the fast wear on the rear).

The rear got replaced with a Kenda K657, which was a great tire for the money, but I had to buy a front instead of a rear (free lesson: long trip? plan ahead so tires are waiting for you), so it didn't last as long as it should have. I'd have bought a set if there hadn't been a sale on the Shinkos (see below).

I've had a Shinko Tour Master on the rear for over 2,000 miles now, and like it well enough that I'm putting another on the front this coming week.

Kenda has a new tire out for older bikes called Retro Active. I haven't ridden on them yet, but they are a bias-ply tire that has a modern compound and radius. You're supposed to get the benefits of a wider tire without having to fit a wider tire because of the crown radius.

higher top end and lower crusing rpm would be why you go to the 18" rim and tire on Maxims

Tires I have been using the Shinko 712 tires good inexpensive tire around 120$ a set

Aesthetics is a good reason. did you use a 750 seca or 650 seca rim?

650, but I would have preffered something wider. Sadly unless going to a 900 wheel (and disc and swing arm), there wasn't muchother choice.

Same here! Shinko bought out Yokohama MC tires. Shinko 712’s are great tires, on my 4th set. Only $120 shipped!

Tooling and all. Yokohama even did the setup at the new factory, trained the workers, and provided support for something like a year after the sale.
