Just digging around looking at the $150 coils for the XJ700X and look around the shop and have a few GM coil packs laying aorund. They have holes for mounting and have two output terminals as the coils fire both sides at the same time so sort of the same idea as the Xj coils. And you could replace the wires when needed by simply popping them off and on like a normal car wire. Just a thought does anyone know if the xj puts out enough of a signal to fire the Gm coil packs or will this just be a research and test and fail type of a thing??

Interesting. I don't know, but I'm curious how it works.

So long as the primary resistance is right they should be ok. Stock is 2.5 ohms, seems like I recall aftermarket coils are often 3 ohms. I wouldn't use them if they're below 2.5 for fear of damaging the TCI.

I used them on mine but I used GM HEI modules to fire them as my TCI unit was scrap.

Also if you do use them use double platinum plugs as the coils work a little differently than our regular coils.

By the way mine runs very well.

If you search you might find the thread .

Ok so I got to get out and mess around a bit here's the scoop. The stockers are around 2.7ohms per the manual mine are 3.1ohms. THe gm coil packs are .03 ohms and I looked that up in the manual as well and it is in spec. Soo I assume it would cause bad things to put them in as is but a guy could soldier in a 2.5ohm resistor if he really want ot do this. THe second obstacle is the mounting holes are about 3/4 closer together on the Gm coil pack than the stock setup. Again not a huge deal I could shorten up the bracket or fab something to get it done. But I am just doing the operation. I will try to remember the camera next time I am over to the shop and get things documented for those that would like to see it. So far the plasti dip was 9.50 and epoxy was 2.49 and pulg wire is going to run about 12 bucks for 6 foot of it(I know more than I need but thats the length I can get it in.

You need to do some more investigating. If you put 12 volts to a .03 ohm load it'll draw 400 amps.

Are you sure it's not 0.03 Kohms?

hmm i wil lookat the meter again to see where I had it set but same setting my x coils come up 3.1 and the book says 2.7, and the gm coil comes up 0.3. You have to remember the gm coil plugs onto thier ignition control module and I am not certain what voltage it gets fed from that control. After this discovery I continued with the operation on my coils I hope to get threw this season or at least this rough time for my money wise and will purchase some new coils when I can do so. The bike runs great as long as it stays dry LOL!. The problem with that is I like to ride and rode it almost every day last year I don't want ot have to think.. hmm its cloudy today should I take the bike then get to work and have it not run right on the way home.

Another bike site discussed successfully using the GM ignition module that goes in the distributor to run the bike, they even showed which wire went on which terminal- - TECHLINE, would this work for our bikes??

The above schematic looks good to me.
    Thanks, Polock!!
