'83 XJ550 Maxim, the oil light was on after an oil and filter change but went out as soon as filter was full and oil was topped up, all good but now when I turn the key on, no oil light. Shouldn't the oil light come on then go out when oil pressure is reached?

Other thing is the YICS tube, I read somewhere it was better to leave it in there permanent, is this the case or should I pull it again after tuning?

Other thing is, do I need and equaliser pipe between both sides of the exhaust, I was just going to run a 2 into 1 on each side, do I need an equaliser pipe between the two?

Many thanks for the cable routing diagrams Fitz, much appreciated.

-the light is an oil LEVEL warning, not an oil pressure switch.

-If by "YICS tube" you mean a YICS blockoff tool, it's not a good idea to leave it in there permanently, especially on a 550. All you'll do is take away some of the engine's performance and KILL your fuel economy.

We block the YICS for doing a running vacuum sync.

-On the 550s, the "collector box" under the bike that all 4 pipes feed into is a major part of its state of tune. You can do whatever you want to the exhaust system, but as soon as you eliminate the collector box the bike will take a major hit, performance-wise.

I don't know where you're going to find a 4-2 system for a 550; your options are pretty much either the stock exhaust or a 4-1. The MAC 4-1 is the only aftermarket system that's readily available in the States.

If you leave the collector box in place, you have a wide variety of muffler choices without screwing up how the bike runs.

Thanks Fitz, I wondered if that was the case with the oil light.

I'll remove the YICS blockoff tube.

I don't have the collector box for the exhaust (this is the XJ400 Special you helped me out with the cable routing) when I got the bike it had a 'homemade' 2 into one on each side which looked terrible. I have replaced the mufflers with aftermarket items and intended to have the 2 into ones and new headers professionally made in stainless. Obviously I won't be able to duplicate the 'collector box' so would a tube same diameter as the headers between the two side suffice?
