She started, reved to 4000 and slowly faded and stalled. Checked the plugs, and all are black and sooty. Plug 1 had just a touch of gas on it. Not sure what to do now.

Air jets (under the rubber diaphram up top) in reversed positions? The smaller of the 2 air jets is fitted to the CENTER hole.

I'll take them off one more time and check that out.

Took them out and you are correct. Better check them all since I have the carbs out.

I switched those two around, checked the others, put the carbs back in and now it won't start. I couldn't see any numbers. Mind you my eyes work better without glasses at close range.

Killed the battery again. Frustrated and walked away for tonight. How far out should the screw being the carbs be?

So woke up early and read and watched videos and decided to take the carbs out again. Rechecked everything for the floats, and bench synced again. Found that the butterflys don't snap back the way they should. What could be causing that.

Misalignment when screwing them back on may cause one to bind on one side against the carb body.

I have everything back together. Still won't start. Might my needles be bad? Seems like it isn't getting gas.

It's not likely to be a problem with the needles.
Take a break for a few days and come back to her with fresh eyes. Don't even think about the bike while you're on that break.

I'm on vacation right now and I want to ride! How can I not think about it. Still going to keep trying. Seems to try to start when it's not on the center stand.

Revisit fuel flow and confirm your wet float levels.

Looks to be about 2 mm below seam. What bike do you have? Looks like Hitachi carbs and probably should be +/- 1 mm.

NOTE: all of the following models used HSC32 carbs:
XJ650 Maxim, Midnight Maxim, XJ650RJ Seca (non-turbo), XJ650 Euro all use HSC32 carbs (various versions)
XJ750 all USA 1981-83 models use HSC32 version 5G200 (Seca) and 15R00 (Maxim and Midnight Maxim)
XJ750 all Canadian 1981-83 models use HSC32 version 5H200 (Seca) and 15T00 (Maxim and Midnight Maxim)
    XJ750 UK/Europe 11M models, XJ750 Police models 24L and 37H use HSC32 version 5N100

    -Fuel level measured via the clear-tube gauge: 3mm +/- 1mm (.12 +/- .04 inches)

Looks like you should be ok in this case.

That's what I thought. Just not sure why it won't start.
