Hey guys, decided to open a new thread that I'm hoping will help some other people too. After reading this thread
I think I understand the concept (btw thanks so much big fitz for the tutorial and pics. Makes this task seem a lot less overwhelming.)
I just wanted to clarify a few things. First I want to make sure that other than tools and probably shims, the only thing I'm going to need is a valve cover gasket, gasket sealer, and some silicone grease, right? Does my XJ1100 have the "donuts" that are described? Looking through the parts catalog I see rubber pressure washers (which I'm thinking is the same thing) for other models, but not mine.

Thanks for your help in advance.

The "donuts" (metal/rubber composite pressure washers) are only used on the YICS motors (and the Seca II, etc.)

Your bike just has a "normal" gasket; and the two rubber half-moons (on the right side) are separate pieces. You probably should replace those too; I'll bet they're hard as rocks.

Oh and you're more than welcome. Happy to help. I put it together because the photos in both the aftermarket and factory books leave a lot to be desired, and neither explain it very well either.

My bike has a YICS motor, but I didn't see the pressure washers listed in the parts catalog. Any idea where I could get some? I also don't see the cam end plugs for my bike, in fact the only ones I see are described as

"HCP1619 Reproduction valvecover gasket rubber CAM-END PLUG, fits all 1980-81 XJ650 models, '82 XJ650 Seca, and all XJ650 Turbo models"

Will these work for my 1100 as well?

    Yes, they will/do/are!

The XJ650 Turbo and the XJ1100 motors are YICS engines, but they use the flat paper-type valve cover gasket, just like the non-YICS engines, and thus also require the use of the separate cam end plugs.

These engines also do NOT require or use valvecover "pressure washers", as they are secured by regular bolts only.

The 1100's Cam Cover Fasteners don't have Collars and Pressure Washer "Donuts".

The Cover gasket is specific to 1100.
The two "Half-moon" PLUGS for the Head are separate items, too.

Even though the 2 Half-moon Plugs have ridges that saddle the cut-out in the Head, ... its a good idea to use a Permanent-type Sealant to keep the Plug in-place once fitted.

Indian Head Gasket Shellac keeps the Plug tight and leak free.
Apply the Sealant to the Head.
Mount the Plug and Seat it using a Straight Edge.
    Let the Sealant Cure.
Add a layer of RTV BLACK on the INSIDE Edge of the Half-moon.
