I have a 82 650 that runs great, and I work on it myself.

I saw on CraigsList a 83 750 that has electrical issues. The PO thinks it needs a new stator in the alternator. I am interested in purchasing this bike (parts, ride for wife, replacement??? who knows) but I think the price he is asking is WAAAYYY too high. Ok, maybe just way to high.

I live in SoCal, and the Blue Book price is $630. He is asking a little bit more than this. If I buy the bike i should sink $300 into it for the stator and rotor.

Is he asking too much, or am I missing something? It seems to be in pretty good shape otherwise, 31k miles, but I only saw the pic on CL.

There are perfect bikes with no issues out there for the money you're talking, try the cash approach and see how sharp this guy can get his pencil.

Prices are tough. It depends on the seller obviously. Some think more of their stuff than others. Not just bikes.

I bought my 81 650 for $300 with the carbs in a box. Seller just wanted it gone. I didn't even haggle the price.

a LOT of people think there old bikes are worth gold. some people are actually STUPID enough to spend the gold. then they realize it's going to cost them 10 more bars of gold to fix it up and replace the missing peices.

it turns around and gets resold.

    altternator peaces are pretty expensive.

The alternator problem has probably been mis-diagnosed, at 31K the brushes have probably worn right out and the seller has no clue.

That being said, it's still a bit steep. Is it a runner, or are the electrical issues keeping it from running?

Do a compression test; if the results are good, go $300. Maybe $400 max.

Fitz...that's exactly what I was thinking. Thanks!

Now, where can I borrow a compression tester?

You can buy them at autozone, advance whatever for about $25.
