My left side muffler is rusting out and I've been looking around at options. I have found the slip on mufflers at the on-line sites, and am also looking at some Sportster mufflers. Can anyone tell me what the correct diameter is for a slip on for an '82 Maxim 750 so that I can use a new gasket and *slip-on* the replacements with mininal effort? I don't want to take mine off until I am ready to do the work or else my bike may be down for longer than I want...

    Thanks!

I believe the diameter is 1 3/4 inches. Len has gaskets, got my new set of gaskets in 3 days. I put a set of sportster mufflers off a 95 and they almost fit perfect. I mean within 1 inch of the current holes on the frame. (82 seca 750). Took a old piece of metal cut it into a rectangle and drilled 2 holes for each side and installed. I love the sound. Not loud, idling nice and smooth and when you get on it it has a differnt sound. Love them. Plus they where free.

Thanks, Nighthawk. I'm not sure if the Sportster mufflers is the way I will go or if I will try and get a different slip on, or whether I will go the MAC 4-into-1 route. The information, however, will make my shopping a lot easier.

    Cheers.

I'm thinking of ordering the MAC system too. Any plans for getting it over the border? I'm thinking of calling some shops in Buffalo and riding down there one weekend...

Hi Beanz. Dennis Kirk has a Canada Post shipping option. You would still be on the hook for the taxes when delivered but you don't get dinged by UPS for brokerage fees. If I do end up getting a MAC system that's my plan of attack.

Thanks for the tip. Are you thinking full chrome or half and half?

    Hi Beanz,

I really haven't decided which way to go. I have to take my exhaust off to replace my neutral safety switch and will see what condition the whole system is in at that point. Some type of slip-on may solve my problem.

If I go with a MAC system, I am really torn. The black headers need to be painted once or twice a year, but cost about a hundred dollars less than the chrome. The chrome is needs to be polished often, and I have heard that because these are a single wall system there can be some discoloration where the headers leave the engine.

I'm going back and forth like a yo-yo. Maybe people who have a MAC system will chime in and help us make a decision.

Well, at the moment Dennis Kirk is showing all three systems as out of stock. Not sure if they'll order them if I ask but I'm going to try. Personally, I'm leaning towards the black. My engine is not "show" quality so chrome pipes would just stand out too much. I don't mind painting them if I have to.
