Alright, I looked in the manual and found out the proper words for my items. I forgot how important that is! Of course, just in case there is some discrepancy between different types of manuals, I'm working from the Haynes manual...please refer to pg. 188.

The speedometer gearbox is not meshing with the drive dog.

This is certainly the problem, but I don't know the solution.

I either need a new speedo gear, or a new dog gear. If I knew the length the dogs were supposed to be, I would know which was bad. I really do think the drive dog has been worn down through the 48000+ miles. Doesn't seem crazy to me, especially if the gearbox hadn't been installed properly once.

So, how long should the dogs be?

    Eyeball factor says about 8mm.

Thanks Robert. Who needs a speedometer anyway, right?
