so, here is a small story i wanted to get off my chest that recently happend.

since im to nervous on fixing things on my bike because i always feel like im going to screw things up, i rely on others to help me. there are two, well..were two, one being in the same town as me, who has his own shop in his garage, and the other being about a two hour drive from my home in the mountains.

well, my fairing broke finally after a few months of cracking on the support frame and ended up getting a headlight from the junk yard for $20, and it looks great. so i had the guy in town take out the old wireing harness which was specialty for that fairing, and hook up the (new to me) headlight. now, not only does he charge me $15 for putting in a bulb, but he also tore out my positive wires for my front turn signals, and mostly *this pisses me off the most* fried my battery that i just bought 3 months ago brand new.

now not only does he refuse to work on my bike because hes pissed off at everyone, but since i bought the battery from him, and god only knows where he got it, i couldnt get an exchange on it, so i had to dish out an other $60 on top of the $55 he charged me, but now i get to have my other guy, which i prefer to work on my bike anyways even though his place is a pain in the ass to get to, but now i get to have him help me put in new wires for my turn signals.

just blowing off some steam on this post is all.

Gee, a shop manual can generally be had for under $30.

All of the things you're describing are well within the scope of even the most amateur DIY mechanic.

I would strongly suggest you track down a book, and quit relying on people who are unfamiliar with XJ Yamahas to work on your bike. Your problem sounds easily solvable.

Besides, you're going to need it for regular maintenance, like valve clearance checks every 5000 miles.

If you bought a brand-new, warranteed battery from this turkey, I'd hold his feet to the fire and make him honest. Make a few phone calls.

Just want to make sure you got the brake delam warning also - good luck.

    Buckblackhoof,

I bought my first bike last June. Have always liked bikes but never rode or owned one. Like many of us, you've come to the right place. Listen to these guys/gals. They know these bikes and will help you get your bike running to form. You won't regret it. YOU CAN DO IT!
