New member. First post. First bike.

I noticed on my stock Maxim xj750 the throttle isn't really "crisp" or rather "responsive" from idle.
I creep up on the throttle to try and find that magic zone that will neither dump me off the bike nor stall.

Unfortunately for me, it seems that zone is very narrow. Is this normal?

Yes, Im a new rider, and yes, Im still learning the throttle/clutch, but seasoned riders have tried it and made a comment that it was "rough".

    Thank you

How long you had the bike?
Cleaned, rebuilt and sync carbs yet?
    Check spark plugs for lean/richness?

Other than actual clutch issues check the above.

Ive had the bike for a month.
No maintenance has been performed since Ive had it. Apparently a little old lady drove it to church on sundays ... so Im told

Is all that maintenance usually expensive if I take it to a shop?

If you find a shop that will work on an old bike, it will cost $$$$$
You need to clean & sync' your carbs, which can cost nothing but time.
All the step by step how tos are here, look at the carb cleaning post by RickCoMatic & BTW welcome.

Thanks for the info. Looks like Im going to become a bike mechanic in my "spare" time.

It idles (after cold start and some warm up) at around 1k.
Feels a little rough but I dont know whats normal.
