I just got an 1983 XJ650 Maxim, running but with a few electrical issues, as a Christmas present and have been slowly working the kinks out of it.

I have just one more kink to work out and that is with the turn signals.

I do either a right turn or a left turn signal and both the front and back turn lights come on for that side and stay on. I hear a single click coming from under the gas tank and that's it. No repetative clicking to indicate the relay is kicking on and off.

Is this problem the relay or do I need to be looking elsewhere? I would hate to buy a $100 relay when that isn't my problem.

I know some of you may ask me to check the bulbs but unfortunately I can't check them because the turn signals are not original, and I can't fit my fat fingers in to pull the bulbs out. As a matter of fact, I want to change out the light housing completely. I don't like the tiny oval look, so if anyone knows of a website where I can get turn signals that would be great.

    Hey, welcome to the forums.
So to address your problem, you're saying that you're running aftermarket signals. When people swap to aftermarket the bulbs aren't creating enough of a load to click the relay over. Stock signals, or any signals with 1156/1157 bulbs would sort it out. Ebay is a good place to find those kind of things (for cheap).

True, but you will lose the self-cancelling feature without a lot of re-engineering.

The original answer is true, your bulbs are likely not drawing enough to make the flasher cycle.
