I'm trying to come up with some good rank titles for the posting members. I'd love to hear some suggestions on this. Ideally I'd like "XJ" to be part of the rank title. These may look a bit lame but for example something like this:

    XJ newbie
    XJ 250
    XJ 500
    XJ 650
    XJ 750
    XJ 900
    XJ 1100
    XJ Yoda

How about the XJ700 or the XJ1300?

I'm not sure it's that good an idea, since I like my XJ650, I'm not a newbie at very much at my age, Yamaha didn't make an XJ250, etc.

Not trying to poke holes, but let's not use models as the criterion.

There's gotta be a better way, how about just learning permit, squid, rider, veteran, geezer, guru?

    My tencents worth

    0-25 Posts Sump sludge
    25-50 Smokin Exhaust
    50-100 Naturally Aspirated
    100-500 Performance Tuned
    500-1000 Turbo Powered
    1000+ NOS Powered

My logic on that range of numbers is due to being a specific XJ site the post numbers may not grow as fast as some would like. Gotta be some encouragement to get past sump sludge ;)

    Note Previous XJowners member.

What did we go with in the end for ranks? We've got a lot of newbies - which is sort of lining up with my ranking numbers... just curious! :)

Personally, I don't think you wanna use ranks based on post numbers. It encourages people to 'spam' the board with posts just to rack up their post count.

If anything, just let the members assign whatever name they want in that slot. It works well for another board I moderate.

Another idea would be to limit the selection to XJ motorcycles and have everyone choose their main ride.

    Just a few ideas.

That's why you assign special ranks to spammers... :) I haven't seen any spammers here... ( We had on another board - so he's Eternal Newbie now]

I've seen it done both ways - doesn't really matter I suppose :)

Mr Forks board had a default name based on your post count, or you could make up your own name if you wanted

Just the stars work too - then you get some feel as to the quality of the response you can expect. Someone with 4+ stars probably has seen it all... you'd expect a pretty good response.

:) Hey I'm just a newbie here... I get to be the one that asks questions of the admins ( instead of the otherway around like normal!)

Funny you should ask. I spent some time this week thinking about this one as well. Another suggestion made by my coworkers was to use ‘gears’ vs ‘speed’ ratio. It’s been a while since I took my Maxim through the gears so these numbers can be adjusted accordingly. Anyone got the proper data?

    For example:
    1-5 = Biker wannabe
    6-10 = Gear grinder
    11-40 = 1st gear
    41 – 80 = 2nd gear
    81 – 130 = 3rd gear
    131 – 200 = 4th gear
    200 – 270 = 5th gear
    271 – 350 = Red liner

Once users pass 350 posts we can come up with some new ranks and the rank span will get wider…

I like the "Eternal Spammer" rank

This software only works based on number of posts or I can assign special ranks. Special ranks will be assigned only to selected few and require more time to manage... They will also be assigned to 'special' people

Oh - you can get some really good ones... It's dealt with a few problem posters we've had. Troll comes to mind... stops the newbies fighting with known trolls. Also - we use it for recognizing special posters - some of the Iron Butt guys for example - if they're crazy enough to do the rally, they a) must know something about bikes and b) deserve a bit of extra respect for doing 11,000 miles in 11 days... c) you got to like them.

Sure gears work... you might find you'll need to adjust the numbers upwards soon - I think I'm ~200, the top ten have over ~20 each... I guess I just defeated my own arguement for adjusting the numbers... bear no heed! :)

    Cheers,
    woot.

( Thanks for being as active as you are = This place keeps getting better )

I implemented the new ranks. Now I have to make some better rank images to fit the ranks accordingly

I keep looking for a 6th speed... no Hired_Goon it just means you have one rank above all of us mortals :p

I beleive your bike goes to 11... so when all of us are riding our bikes at 10, you can kick it up one more!
