... just a guess. How about implementing a picture database in this forum?

The problem is there is a lot of information inside of those great forums. But it is more like a discussion. For sure you will find answers to your problems. But it will take a while.

The idea is that when one topic has been discussed to the end and everthing is clear it could be put in into the picture database and could be described there in words and pics. The headline would be the short description of the problem.

It would surely be a pretty big undertaking with the many such threads on any given subject. There are so many awsome and Very informative threads, for example the old school method to rebuilding carbs by Rick Massey: http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... carbs.html . The only problem that I have which will soon be rectified by the manual hopefully, is the time it takes to look up the pictures to some of the parts.

It would probably be easier to make a few albums of pics and reference the parts for newbies such as me and possibly you (not to mean offense bro!) to reference. Probably help out a little bit more than the book anyways because there would be sooo many more angles and more descriptive commentary!

Overall, I think it is a good idea, it would just take a LOT of time and effort. Part of the reason why we should donate to the upkeep to this site, it helps them to have the time and money to do so!

I don't think a database per say is required, however a little better management of the walkthroughs and guides would be better.

There are several walkthroughs and guides that just need to be shuffled around I think. I.E. Rick's monthly novels, Gamuru's had a few recently that are pretty nice, heck even I did one. They just all seem to be out there, here or there.

Maybe we could actually utilize the "XJ FAQ Final" section? Rename it to "Walkthroughs and Guides" Maybe add a few sub-forums like:

    Carburetor / Fuel System
    Engine Maintenance
    Transmission / Final Drive
    Wheels / Tires / Bearings / Brakes
    Electrical System
    Modification / other

Heck, if we started to organize some of these, I'd be more than happy to volunteer some time to photo-document the processes. We could even task some of the photo-documenting out to some of our regular members.

Ok, I'm motivated now. Can I be part of the XJBikes Team? I'll do it!

People like my "Monthly Novels" ... lots of others really like "Old School Method"

I slacked-off during the Summer because I was out having so much dang fun riding all-over on the Max that I let the typing get behind.

I had another Electric Trouble-shooting piece in-the-works ... but, the flow chart one already available is incomparable.

So, I'm working on a piece that explains Pilot Air, Main Air and Starting Circuit.

I've always thought that some structure to the information here would be helpful for new readers. Who wants to spend time searching for information when you could be fixing your bike and enjoying the ride?

To that end, I've copied down the structure we use at work for looking up parts. Obviously, not all of these will apply to motorcycles, but it gets you a heck-of-a-lot closer than where we are right now...

    Code:
    1. IGNITION & ENGINE FILTERS
    	a. ENGINE FILTERS & PCV
    	b. SPARK PLUGS
    	c. TUNE-UP IGNITION
    	d. COILS, MODULES & OTHER IGNITION
    	e. IGNITION WIRES
    	f. SPECIFICATIONS
    2. BELTS & COOLING
    	a. BELTS
    	b. HOSES
    	c. WATER PUMP, GASKET, FAN & CLUTCH
    	d. THERMOSTAT, GASKET & HOUSING
    	e. RADIATOR, CAP, FAN MOTOR & SWITCH
    3. FUEL & EMISSION
    	a. FUEL PUMP, TANK & TURBO SYSTEM
    	b. CARBURETORS
    	c. CARBURETOR KITS & PARTS
    	d. CARBURETOR CHOKE PARTS
    	e. EMISSION PARTS
    	f. FUEL INJECTION
    	g. ENGINE FILTERS & PCV
    4. ELECTRICAL
    	a. ALTERNATORS & GENERATORS
    	b. STARTER, SOLENOID, RELAY & SWITCH
    	c. BATTERY & CABLES
    	d. CHARGING SYSTEM PARTS
    	e. STARTING SYSTEM PARTS
    	f. BELTS
    5. HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
    	a. HEATER VALVES, HEATER CORES & BLOWERS
    	b. AIR CONDITIONING & HEATER SWITCH & RELAY

    	d. AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR PARTS
    	e. AIR CONDITIONING CLUTCH & IDLER PARTS
    	f. AIR CONDITIONING FILTER, VALVE, CONDENSER, EVAPORATOR & HOSE
    6. BRAKES & WHEEL BEARINGS
    	a. FRONT BRAKE PADS & SHOES, ROTORS & DRUMS
    	b. FRONT BRAKE HYDRAULICS
    	c. FRONT BRAKE HARDWARE
    	d. REAR BRAKE PADS & SHOES, ROTORS & DRUMS
    	e. REAR BRAKE HYDRAULICS
    	f. REAR BRAKE HARDWARE & CABLES
    	g. MASTER CYLINDER, BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, POWER BOOSTER & ABS
    	h. WHEEL BEARINGS & SEALS

    	c. STEERING PARTS
    	d. POWER STEERING HOSE & PUMPS
    	e. POWER STEERING KITS & SEALS

    	g. TRANSMISSIONS
    11. VISION, MANUALS, & MISC.
    	a. WIPERS, ARMS & RELATED
    	b. FUEL CAPS, HITCHES & MISCELLANEOUS
    	c. BODY SWITCHES & RELAYS
    	d. SEALED BEAMS, LAMPS, FLASHERS & FUSES
First, you pick your category, then you pick your sub-category. So, let's say you're wanting to find information about replacing the rear brake shoes, you'd look under "6. BRAKES & WHEEL BEARINGS", then "d. REAR BRAKE PADS & SHOES, ROTORS & DRUMS".

    Just a thought...

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but there is a picture database and it's called the gallery. I was just in the gallery and there are 50 pages of image libraries - with absolutely no order! At the Suzuki GS site, they have segregated the images by model year. I think either model year and/or model indexes (with one for non-XJ bikes, one for non-bike photos and another for technical photos) would help sort out the gallery immensely.

The gallery is searchable; but that relies on an unspecified naming convention (that doesn't exist.)
