i just got my 1984 fj600 running, but the air filter is out and the bike wil only run well with the choke patially on. do think it is because there is to much air flowing. maybe the bike would run properly with air box.

Your choke increases the amount of fuel dumped into your carbs. The filter might help if it restricts air flow a little, it also, you might try adjusting your carbs to run a little richer, that will help with the extra air.

Not really recomended to run an engine without an air filter Cole, any dust getting through will increase the wear in the cylinders, I once used some pantyhose soaked in oil as an emergeny filter in a car, but fit that filter as soon as it arrives!

yes i know that' the ? pertains to the bike not running right at this time, since it really does not like to run without the choke on, i believe it is getting to much air since it is not jetted to run wiht no air filter.

If the choke on that bike is really an "enrichment circuit" - then you've probably got clogged idle passsages in the carbs. A thorough cleaning would be in order to rid the carbs of any tiny particles that would be clogging an idle passage.
