I got my motorcycle back from the mechanic who could not fix it and I decided to take Fitz's advice and start from scratch. I have put it in our spare room as I don't have a garage. While I was preparing to check the valve clearances I decided to pull the coils off and check them. Both of the coils read 2.5 ohms on the primary lead but I was unable to get a reading between the primary leads and the spark plug wires. The manual says these should read 11,000 ohms but both of them read as if there is a broken wire. I don't know why the mechanic would not have checked this. Are both coils bad or could I be doing something wrong when checking them, It seems pretty straight forward.

You've checked the primary resistance properly, but the secondary resistance (plug wires) is measured from one plug wire to the other (with the resistive plug caps removed).....there is no physical, electrical connection inside the coils between the primary and secondary side of the coil; they are separate, individual circuits.
