Picked up a 83 Maxim a couple of years back that had been sitting for a while. Got it fired up but have picked up a pretty good oil leak from the shifter cover.

Sanity check question - I figured it was no big deal but the nub that catches the return spring from the side stand prevents the cover from just sliding out. Is that normal? Or has someone been welded that in at the wrong angle. Either way it looks like I would need to lift the engine a 1/2" to get that off. Should you get that kind of play pulling the front mounting bolts? Looks like the rear mounts could pivot.

It should come off without any issues.
Sounds like someone had done something wrong.

So I confirmed my suspicion. Someone has been in patching before. Scraped it a bit and a plug of metal popped off.

My theory is someone left the kickstand down and took a corner snapping it off and damaging the shifter cover.

Looks like the patch they put in has deteriorated over time.

Any recommendations on how to fix it? Or am I way better off looking for new cover?

If it was the last one on earth and you could weld and machine aluminium you might repair it. But it's not. Look for another cover.

Meh, Clean it up good and patch with a 2-part epoxy.
Unless you care about looks that is.

Do the repair one time. I have one of those covers available. I have one for $15 plus postage (about 12$). Shine it up an paint it.
