82 Maxim 650 Brake Drums

    I pulled the rear wheel off today to replace the brake shoes, which I found to be too large for my bike. However, I'm not sure that the drum has enough metal left to be safe. Is there a quick and easy way to check if the drums are still legal? If not, do I need to buy a new wheel to replace?

    Well...I'd make a measurement. The Haynes says 200mm (7.87 inches) for max. drum diameter. For about $25 you can score a vernier caliper that will get you the range you need. About the only way I know to measure the legality and SAFETY of a brake drum.
    The brake drum on these types of rear wheels is integral to the assembly so there is no feasable way to replace them. Just source another wheel assembly. There may be some way to have a new drum installed but I am not aware of anyone who does or would.
