My bike has a voltage regulator that connects to 5 wires in the wiring harness. 3 to the stator coils, regulated power, and ground.

I ordered a "fits all years xj600" regulator off ebay, and it has a 4 pin connector. If it will work, I'll save the hassle of shipping back, and adapt it. If you can tell me how.

I checked the service manual, and it looks like up through '96 they used 3 wires to the stator, regulated power, and ground was through the case.

It looks like this, and I expect it really is the correct regulator for older xj600s

What is the pin-out? Which wires do I connect where?
