to paint or not to paint

i would like to get a few opinions. pulled my cdi cover stripped it.chucked it up turned all the rough casting down on the outside by the shifter. it looks chrome now .not sure if i want to paint the triangles between them or spend a few hours with the dremel trying to finish polishing the spots where the big buffer cant get at. If i black them out it would really show it off but im not sure what i want to do. im gonna do one or the other later today.

 

Should've just painted the raised portion of the cover black and left the triangles polished. Just my take on it.

Trouble is that since it's all nice and polished (nice job BTW), the paint won't stick very well now and you should rough it up a bit if you decide to paint it.

 

ya, i would do what mike did, where the raised parts are polished and the triangles are painted...

 

hey mike my cover looks just like yours now wanna trade the other side. for some reason my camera doesnt take good pics inside i know it has an ajustment for it but they are ok . i roughed them before painting .i havnt looked in the manual when i pull the water pump cover no coolant should come out unless the seal is bad correct. im moving really slowly on it i have 2 viragos 1 the carbs have to be put back on im hoping to get a bike lift in the next few weeks. health problems are really messing me up . The bikes are the only thing keeping me sane hoping i will be able to ride again .

If you are talking about the little round cover with the two big phillips screws, no worry. That is the access port to the pump gear. When you pull that off, you'll just see the drive gear (no coolant)
BUT that does NOT mean your seal is good. There is a tiny weep hole on the water pump housing that allows any coolant that gets by the water pump to leak out before it seeps into the motor oil. IF the seal was bad, you'd have a slow coolant leak oosing down the motor and it looks just like the bottom coolant tube is leaking.

Don't even think about taking the coolant piping apart unless you have new orings. That 25 year old rubber is not very elastic anymore and you'll need new ones to get it sealed up.

Take your time and it will give you something to be proud of.

 

actually i was talking about the cover at the end of the crank like the one i just polished the manual shows draining coolant but from what i saw i think the bolt is in the bottom of the cyl and its just a bad pic i cant get down to take a good look at it

 

Yes, there is a bolt in the bottom of the cylinder and another one in the bottom of the cooling tube right in from of the crank cover you just painted.
IIRC, they are 8mm hex and will have a small copper crush washer under them. It's a different screw from anything that holds the bike together.

 

thanks guy thats what i thought got my 4 into 1 new seat today. bike has been jetted allready so a little tweak here and there should do it hopefully.
i really like how your bike turned out i looked at the pics on photobucket i think if you put anymore on that page of it let me know it inspires me. and with something that looks that good can look at it for a long time and get ideas what i would like to do to mine. do you think the silver side of the wheel by the drive shaft would polish up good i know it will be a pain but would really stand out especially on mine since there wont be exhaust on that side will have a bike lift in a week or 2 so it wouldnt be that bad on my back doing it
